The University of Calgary’s Office of Continuing Medical Education & Professional Development (CME&PD), in collaboration with the Physician Learning Program (PLP), has launched a new tool, My Practice Improvement (MyPI).

It can be challenging for physicians to find sources of data to inform practice change and identify areas for practice improvement and meaningful quality improvement (QI) opportunities. The MyPI tool, developed by physicians for physicians, assists with this process.

“We are actually doing quality improvement every single day with every patient,” says Dr. Tina Nicholson, Family Physician and Medical Director of Family Medicine, CME&PD and PLP. “What we’re now looking at is transferring that to our general practice and making that practice flow better, making things work more efficiently, and also allowing us to sleep well at night when we are not in our practice […] as we know that there are systems in place that protect us and our patients.”

MyPI provides embedded e-coaching for physicians and teams, and a framework for how to best reflect on their practice and create actionable change plans, which incorporate reminders and goal setting. Physicians using this tool can complete independent QI activities, group QI activities or select from a list of QI activity templates.

There is an annual subscription cost for MyPI and an early-bird discount is currently available. Read more about the launch of MyPI, and access the tool online at ecme.ucalgary.ca/my-pi.

The Office of Continuing Medical Education & Professional Development provides and coordinates integrated academic educational and assessment activities, along with resources that promote lifelong learning for healthcare professionals, for excellence in clinical practice focused on improving health outcomes.

The Physician Learning Program creates actionable clinical information and engages with physicians, teams, patients and partners to co-create sustainable solutions to advance practice.

CPSA’s Physician Practice Improvement Program (PPIP) requires physicians to complete one personal development and two quality improvement activities at least once over a five-year cycle. MyPI is just one of the many tools available through which physicians can gain valuable insight into their practice, earn CPD credits and meet the requirements of a PPIP activity.
