CPSA now proudly regulating physician assistants

April Messenger 2021, Physician Assistants | Posted April 8, 2021

April 1, 2021, was an exciting and proud day for CPSA as we officially welcomed Alberta’s physician assistants (PAs) to CPSA regulation. PAs will continue to practise under physician supervision and like physicians, they will have to pay annual fees, hold liability insurance and follow CPSA’s Standards of Practice. They will also be responsible for complying with our continuing competence requirements.

For decades, PAs have played a key role in supporting physicians and patient care, and we look forward to working more closely with them.

Alberta is the third province to regulate the PA profession, following Manitoba and New Brunswick.

No more voluntary PA listing
Now that CPSA regulates physician assistants, we have closed down our voluntary PA listing. PAs who want to practise in Alberta will need to register formally with CPSA. Please see the PA section of our website for more information.
