Information for Physicians & Physician Assistants

CPSA works together with physicians and physician assistants across Alberta to provide patients with excellent care.

CPSA programs for physicians

As part of our responsibility to protect the public, CPSA works with physicians to ensure patients are getting the high level of quality care they need and deserve.

We do this by working collaboratively with the profession and by offering a variety of programs and resources to help physicians in their practice.

"Our Continuing Competence program continues to evolve based on input from our partners, emerging evidence and best practices in regulation."

- Dr. Dawn Hartfield, CPSA Deputy Registrar

Complaints

As a physician, you have the training, skills and intention to provide safe patient care, but at some point or another in your medical career, you may receive a complaint. This is not always a bad thing—in fact, it can often result in positive practice changes.

How was I selected to participate in MSF360?

Selection is both random and based on self-reported responses to the Physician Practice Improvement Program (PPIP) questions contained in CPSA’s annual Renewal Information Form (RIF), and/or result of PPIP audit. Regulated members are also welcome to volunteer for participation. Please note that PPIP is entirely separate from CPSA’s complaint and disciplinary processes.

I was selected for MSF360 but I don’t work in a typical practice setting. Do I still need to participate?

Yes. MSF360 is a collaborative process and we will work with you to identify peers in similar practice settings who can offer valuable feedback relevant to your practice.

If you are not involved in direct patient care, please contact us at msf@cpsa.ab.ca or 1-800-561-3899 ext. 4986, as you may be exempt from the patient cohort.

I’ve been selected to participate in MSF360. Is this mandatory?

Yes. Under the Health Professions Act, physicians must work with CPSA to assess their competence. Please see our standard of practice and program manual on Continuing Competence for more information.

What if I am selected for MSF360 and choose not to participate?

You will be referred to Continuing Competence’s Assistant Registrar to discuss alternatives.

What is the difference between a Hearing Tribunal’s decision on merits and their decision on sanction?

The merits decision outlines whether or not a physician is guilty of unprofessional conduct.

If the physician is found guilty, the sanctions decision will capture the penalties levied against the physician by the Hearing Tribunal.
