In an effort to support efficiency, licensure decisions and accurate data access, the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) launched the first phase of the National Registry of Physicians (NRP) this spring. The NRP is the first nationally integrated source of data on physicians in Canada and functions as a centralized information exchange.

A wide range of physician data will be accessible in one cloud-based and secure location. The shared data will include:

  • Demographic information, including name, gender, year of birth
  • Practice location(s)
  • Phone number and email address
  • Registration details
  • Medical Identification Number for Canada (MINC)
  • Disciplines
  • Medical degrees
  • Certifications
  • Language(s) of practice
  • Disciplinary actions

The NRP is accessible to medical regulatory authorities across the country, and CPSA has begun securely sharing our data as part of this initiative. The next phase of the NRP includes providing public access; however, the public will only have access to information that is currently available to them in provincial college registers according to privacy laws. Development of the NRP adhered to privacy and security best practices, and all data will be stored within Canada. The NRP will be a fundamental building block, streamlining physician registration, bringing regulators closer to achieving national portability of physicians in Canada and improving patients’ access to physicians in Canada.
