A PROactive approach to physician wellness

August Messenger 2019 | Posted August 8, 2019

What is PROactive?

Established in 2018, PROactive is an alliance of Alberta’s healthcare partners designed to collaboratively and collectively support physicians and learners, to advance physician wellness while addressing disruptive physician behaviour.

Why PROactive?

Despite the best efforts of each individual PROactive partner, the initial research conducted told us that healthcare professionals have reported feelings of disenchantment and burnout, and have expressed concerns about Alberta’s healthcare landscape-highlighting the need to address this important issue.

We know that when physicians are well they have a greater capacity for resilience. They are more able to approach the work of caring for patients and collaborating with teams in civil, compassionate and insightful ways. Effective, fair and compassionate leaders set the tone for teams to experience psychological safety and to respectfully challenge system defects in order to improve the experience for patients and for other providers in the system.

PROactive partners

  • College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
  • Alberta Medical Association
  • Alberta Health Services
  • Covenant Health
  • Health Quality Council or Alberta
  • Primary Care Networks
  • University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry
  • University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine

By joining forces, the PROactive partners will work together to fund and implement a multi-pronged action plan, designed to promote physician wellness, leadership development, peer support, demonstration projects and more.

A dedicated and transparent measurement and evaluation strategy will help all partners to approach system change through a continuous quality improvement lens where people are challenged to change the system in ways that are better for everyone.

Implementation of this initiative will begin in 2020.

What does PROactive mean for you?

Focusing on physician wellness and driving meaningful cultural change within Alberta’s healthcare system will take all physicians coming together to find a solution. The PROactive partners will look for the support of all physicians to reflect on what they can do create more positive and professional healthcare work environments throughout our province.
