Keeping up with Council: December 2024
Back to MessengerRead time: 2 minutes
Highlights from December’s Council meeting
CPSA Council, composed of regulated members, medical learners and Albertans, sets the organization’s overall direction and policies. Council generally meets four times per year to discuss key issues and make important decisions that impact medical practice in Alberta.
Here are some key highlights from the December meeting:
- Dr. Jaelene Mannerfeldt, whose 6-year tenure with CPSA Council is coming to an end, shared her last Chair’s report, reflecting on her path to the role of Chair and opportunities for Councillors to contribute to CPSA’s mission to serve and protect patients across Alberta. The CPSA Council and team thanked Dr. Mannerfeldt for her leadership as 2024 Chair.
- Dr. Scott McLeod shared his Registrar’s report of 2024 highlights, including improvements to the annual renewal process for regulated members, how 124 patients submitted physician commendations for positive healthcare experiences and an overall operational update from across the CPSA team.
- Council received an update on CPSA’s expanded sponsorship model from the Registration team. CPSA recently announced 370 new sponsored family medicine positions in Alberta since expanding our sponsorship model in March.
- You can learn more about sponsorship and its role in bringing internationally trained physicians into Alberta on cpsa.ca.
- Council approved revisions to the Accreditation standards for Hyperbaric Oxygen Administration Standards and Cardiac Stress Testing (CST) Standards, both of which now support a quality management system approach.
- Council approved a revision to the General Register Policy for Physician Assistants (PAs) to now accept American-certified PAs who would like to practice in Alberta.
The first Council meeting of 2025 will take place on March 6 and 7, when Council will welcome Dr. Nicole Cardinal as Chair.
