Consultation 025: Provide feedback on three standards starting Dec. 12

Read time: 1 minute

To comply with changes to the Health Professions (Protecting Women and Girls) Amendment Act, 2022, Bill C-7 and Mental Health Services Protection Regulation, CPSA drafted a new Female Genital Mutilation standard and revised our Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) and Safe Prescribing for Opioid Use Disorder standards.

CPSA Council approved these standards for consultation at their December meeting, and we will be seeking your feedback from Dec. 12, 2022 to Jan. 11, 2023.

Background on the standards

Female Genital Mutilation standard On May 31, 2022, Health Professions (Protecting Women and Girls) Amendment Act, 2022 received royal assent and came into force. The amendment requires all regulatory colleges in Alberta to adopt a standard of practice that addresses female genital mutilation by their regulated members.
Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) standard CPSA issued the Medical Assistance in Dying standard of practice in 2016 when MAID was first legalized in Canada for individuals with terminal illnesses. On Mar. 17, 2023, individuals whose sole underlying medical condition is mental illness will become eligible for MAID under Bill C-7. To comply with this upcoming change to Canada’s MAID law, CPSA updated our Medical Assistance in Dying standard of practice.
Safe Prescribing for Opioid Use Disorder standard On Oct. 5, 2022, the Alberta Government updated Mental Health Services Protection Regulation to change the treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) involving high-potency opioid narcotics. This change requires individuals with OUD or addiction who have not been able to initiate or stabilize on conventional Opioid Agonist Treatment to be treated through Alberta Health’s narcotic transition services. As a result of this change, CPSA updated our Safe Prescribing for Opioid Use Disorder standard of practice.

We will notify you via direct email when Consultation 025 opens on Dec. 12. Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your feedback on these important standards.
