The 2026 annual renewal for physicians and physician assistants is now open! Make sure to complete your 2026 annual renewal on your CPSA Portal by Dec. 31, 2025.

Check out our annual renewal FAQ page and these tips for assistance as you fill out your form. If you haven’t already, sign up for CPSA’s Pre-Authorized Payment (PAP) plan by Nov. 20, 2025, to ensure your annual renewal payment is automatically withdrawn from your account and submitted to CPSA in December of each year.

What do my annual renewal fees cover?

Your annual fees allow CPSA to cover operational costs associated with the programs and initiatives that support you throughout your career. Additionally, these fees help us promote safe, quality care for Albertans. Every year, annual fees are determined based on the funding required to meet the needs of the profession and deliver CPSA’s programming, as per our strategic objectives and business plan, approved by Council, and mandated by the Health Professions Act.

To support attraction and retention efforts, CPSA approved an attraction and retention annual fee discount of $200 for the 2026 annual renewal, reducing the total annual fees for physicians from $2,200 to $2,000. The prorated equivalent is applied where annual fees are a smaller proportion of the general physician annual fee of $2,200 (see Physician Fees – College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta | CPSA for all fees). Physicians will pay $2,000 to maintain registration with CPSA, which will be reflected on your invoice. This is consistent with the 2025 annual fee where the fee was discounted by $200 to total $2,000. Physician assistants renewing this fall will pay $500 to maintain registration with CPSA.

Physician annual fees for 2026 as compared to the last 5 years are outlined as follows:

In 2022, we saw the subsidization of annual fees from CPSA’s Building Fund Reserve toward CPSA operations. In 2026, as in 2025, CPSA will subsidize annual fees by drawing down on surplus funds and operating at a deficit for the year. Surplus funds accumulated as a result of higher than forecasted membership numbers and lower than budgeted operating costs in prior years.

Members who have active practice permits but are not engaged in any clinical work for at least 6 consecutive months may qualify for CPSA’s non-clinical register and reduced fees. Physicians and physician assistants renewing on the non-clinical register for 2026 will pay $500 and $125, respectively, to maintain registration with CPSA.

CPSA’s 2026 Budget can be reviewed here.

How are fees used in each department?

CPSA supports valuable programs with areas of focus ranging from quality assurance and improvement (Physician Practice Improvement Program, MD Snapshot, etc.), innovative research (Analytics, Innovation & Research team) and resolution options for complaints received about regulated members. Annual fees make it possible for us to support high-quality medical practice across Alberta. In the 2026 Budget, member annual fees are allocated between programs as follows:
