2027 annual renewal: breakdown of annual fees
The 2027 annual renewal for physicians, physician assistants and professional corporations opens on Monday, Nov. 2, 2026.
Every year, annual fees are determined based on the funding required for CPSA to meet our mandate under the Health Professions Act. This includes regulating medical practice and delivering CPSA’s programming, as per our strategic priorities and business plan approved by Council. Your accompanying annual fees allow CPSA to cover operational costs associated with the programs and initiatives that enable us to promote safe, quality care for Albertans.
What are my annual renewal fees for 2027?
This year, the 2027 annual fees will be reduced from $2,000 to $1,800 for physicians and from $500 to $450 for physician assistants. Regulated members who have active practice permits but will not be engaged in any clinical work for at least six consecutive months starting in January 2027 may qualify for CPSA’s non-clinical register, with reduced fees of $450 for physicians and $112.50 for physician assistants. Students coming to Alberta to complete an elective will not be required to pay any participation fees associated with the elective placement.
Physician annual fees over the last 5 years are outlined as follows:

Why have fees been reduced?
CPSA’s core business is funded by regulated members and we have a responsibility to be good stewards of those funds. Over the last couple years, CPSA has experienced growth in regulated member registrations and strong returns on our investments. Combined with the prudent spending of our team, this has resulted in CPSA having additional savings which we have been working to draw down.
For 2027, CPSA Council approved the reduction of annual fees and the continuation until June 30, 2027, of waiving the first year annual and registration fees for Alberta residents and fellows. Council also approved a one-time 13-month practice permit as CPSA prepares for changes to the annual renewal period next year—stay tuned for more information in the New Year!
These initiatives result in a carefully planned deficit budget for 2027 utilizing the additional savings mentioned above, which is part of a broader multi-year financial plan. Through this plan, we are able to support regulated members and the health care they provide in Alberta, while addressing financial sustainability for CPSA in the long term.
How are fees used in each department?
Annual fees make it possible for CPSA to support high-quality medical practice across Alberta. This in turn supports high-quality care with important professional regulation programs ranging from quality assurance and improvement (Physician Practice Improvement Program, MD Snapshot, etc.), innovative research (Analytics, Innovation & Research team) and resolution options for regulated members in the complaints process. In the 2027 Budget, member annual fees are allocated between programs as follows:
