Know what’s happening, when and if you’re eligible to run

Preparation for the 2021 Council Election is well underway. Knowing the heightened demands on physicians, our goal is to make participating in this year’s election as efficient and easy as possible.

Please add the following key dates to your calendar, including nominations, which officially open on August 11.

 

Nominations open August 11; Nominations close September 6; Voting opens September 11; Voting closes October 11; New Councillors announced November 10; New Councillors begin three-year term on January 1, 2022

Are you interested in running this year?

This year’s election will fill two regulated member vacancies. We encourage any regulated member on the General Register, the Provisional Register or the Limited Practice Register to run, whether a physician, surgeon, osteopath or physician assistant, if they meet the following eligibility requirements.

Regulated member is eligible if: Regulated member is NOT eligible if:*
  • They do not have any fees, costs, fines, assessments, levies or any other sums owing to CPSA;
  • They have a valid and current practice permit that is not currently suspended; and
  • They are in compliance with all orders or directions made pursuant to the Health Professions Act.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 
  • They are currently subject to an undertaking, a condition imposed under section 55 or 65, or a direction under section 118 of the Health Professions Act; or
  • They have been formally charged with unprofessional conduct that has not yet been determined by a Hearing Tribunal; or
  • They have been found guilty of unprofessional conduct within the preceding ten (10) years; or
  • They have been found guilty of unprofessional conduct related to sexual abuse, misconduct or any sexual boundary violation at any time in any jurisdiction including outside of Canada; or
  • They are elected to federal or provincial public office; occupy a senior position (Assistant Deputy Minister or higher) with the Government of Alberta; are a senior member or officer of a Regional Health Authority; or as their primary responsibility in the course of their employment represent an organization in collective bargaining or in proceedings under a collective bargaining agreement with regulated members (where those proceedings negotiate or set fees charged by regulated members for professional services), unless they cease to have those positions and five (5) years have passed.

*At its May 2021 meeting, Council amended its bylaws surrounding who is not eligible for election to better align with the Health Professions Act.
