About the standard
The Human Health Research standard was published in September 2012, reissued by CPSA Council in October 2015 and is under review to support consistency with national guidance and other related CPSA standards. Content of the standard has been streamlined to remove duplicated requirements that are already communicated by Alberta research ethics boards, as well as removing expectations that may not be applicable to all situations. An Advice to the Profession document will be developed to address clauses that were removed to ensure regulated members participating in health research are aware of other considerations.
What’s changed?
- Proposed title change to Health Research to reflect terms used by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research;
- Addition of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2) and course on research ethics as resources to support alignment with national guidance;
- Updated terminology from “patient” to “participant” for consistency with current terminology and to clarify that the standard applies to research subjects, not a physician’s patient(s); and
- Addition of a clause addressing participants and research funding to protect the public interest.
