About the Approved Jurisdiction Route
If you are an IMG applying for independent practice in Alberta on or after June 9, 2025, you may be eligible for the Approved Jurisdiction Route to registration.
The Approved Jurisdiction Route recognizes the substantial equivalence of credentials from approved jurisdictions and qualifies these physicians for licensure directly on the General Register.

Want to know if you are eligible? First, you must follow the steps to apply for independent practice as an IMG. These steps include:
Create your physiciansapply.ca account and submit your qualifications review: CPSA will confirm if you meet eligibility requirements for the Approved Jurisdiction Route and send an Eligibility Letter.
After you receive your Eligibility Letter, submit all supporting documents: Refer to your Eligibility Letter to complete and submit your full application.
Important: Physicians do not apply directly for the Approved Jurisdiction Route to registration. CPSA’s Registration team will review your application and let you know if you are eligible.

Which jurisdictions are considered approved?
CPSA maintains a list of certifications from specific jurisdictions that have been deemed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to be equivalent to Canadian specialty credentials.
