TPP Alberta update: PrescribeIT and Type 1 prescribing requirements
Back to MessengerRead time: 1 minute
In September 2020, the TPP Alberta Steering Committee approved the use of PrescribeIT for methadone prescribing, waiving the previous requirement for a TPP secure prescription form.
At their May 4, 2023, meeting, the TPP Steering Committee will consider a request from Canada Health Infoway for a broader exemption from the use of TPP forms, allowing electronic prescribing with PrescribeIT for all type 1 TPP drugs.
Interim exemptions from the use of secure TPP forms for type 1 TPP-monitored drugs is currently permitted if the following conditions are met:
- Both the prescriber and pharmacy are enabled with PrescribeIT and use it for system-to-system communications.
- The patient has a choice of the pharmacy where their prescription(s) is filled and must not be directed only to PrescribeIT-enabled pharmacies.
Alberta prescribers and pharmacies who are already using PrescribeIT for electronic prescribing of TPP type 1 drugs can temporarily continue to do so to minimize risk of interruptions to patient care. Further updates and guidance will be issued following the TPP Steering Committee’s deliberations in May.
