CPSA statement on discriminatory comments made on allegedly fraudulent social media accounts

Posted March 5, 2021

CPSA is aware of discriminatory comments made on now deleted Facebook accounts purporting to be Dr. Michael Laffin, a physician who was registered in Alberta but is not currently practising, and Dr. Phil Tran, a physician who is practising in Alberta. The discriminatory comments made on Facebook are disturbing and would be a significant concern to CPSA if proven to be made by a regulated physician.

Dr. Laffin and Dr. Tran reached out immediately to CPSA to report these allegedly fraudulent comments, indicating they were not made by them. CPSA has no ability to verify the validity of comments made on social media.

This serves as an excellent reminder to all physicians to carefully secure their passwords and social media accounts to prevent challenging situations like this. If a fraudulent account is created, the account should be reported to the social media platform and local authorities immediately.
