Posted February 24, 2023
Council approved the revisions to both the Safe Prescribing for Opioid Use Disorders and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) standards, as well as the new Female Genital Mutilation standard at their February meeting. Due to legislative requirements, the effective dates for each standard are as follows:
- Safe Prescribing for Opioid Use Disorders standard: effective Feb. 24, 2023. As the Government of Alberta’s Mental Health Services Protection Regulation has been in place since Oct. 5, 2022, CPSA’s revised Safe Prescribing for Opioid Use Disorders standard comes into effect immediately, following Council’s approval on Feb. 23. The updated Advice to the Profession document has been published.
- Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) standard: effective March 17, 2023. The updated MAID standard will reflect the status of Bill C-7 (currently tabled federally for extension) and the inclusion or exclusion of mental illness as an indication when the standard comes into effect. We are in the process of updating the Advice to the Profession document, which should be ready when the standard takes effect.
- Female Genital Mutilation standard: effective May 1, 2023. In response to the Health Professions (Protecting Women and Girls) Amendment Act, 2022 (formerly Bill 10), CPSA’s new Female Genital Mutilation standard will come into effect on May 1, 2023. We are currently developing an Advice to the Profession and Advice to Albertans document for the standard.
