REVU supports quality medical practice with evidence-based research and evaluation.
The Research & Evaluation Unit (REVU) conducts health and regulatory-focused research and supports all CPSA departments by evaluating program effectiveness. REVU is a program within CPSA’s Analytics, Innovation & Research (AIR) department.

About REVU’s work
How does REVU support CPSA's regulatory work?
REVU supports all operational arms at CPSA by:
- Evaluating existing programs, including physician competence programs, and supporting the design, development and evaluation of new programs
- Liaising with CPSA team members and external experts to conduct meaningful, practical and innovative medical regulatory research
How does REVU support patient care?
REVU supports patient care by:
- Striving to create a culture in which patients can be confident in the care provided to them by CPSA-regulated physicians
- Promoting evidence-based programs that support Alberta physicians in improving their medical practice
How does REVU contribute to evidence-based medical regulation?
REVU contributes to evidence-based medical regulation by:
- Studying and developing science-based research designed to strengthen programs and processes within the practise of medicine
- Using reliable evidence to improve the development and implementation of CPSA’s medical regulatory programs and processes

Our vision is to bring an evidence-based lens to everything that CPSA does, including internal programs and processes, engagements with provincial, national and international collaborators and to be a leader in the emerging field of medical regulation research.

Our research goals aim to ensure that CPSA remains responsive to emerging issues in healthcare while maintaining high standards of patient safety and quality care.

- Evaluating the effectiveness of CPSA’s policies
- Examining trends in medical practice and technology adoption
- Assessing the impact of regulatory decisions on the health of Albertans
- Improving CPSA’s processes and efficiency
- Evaluating the impact of continuing competence on physician performance
- Investigating stakeholder engagement and communication strategies
- Studying health equity and access to care in regulatory practices
- Monitoring and evaluate complaints
- Assessing CPSA’s impact on healthcare system sustainability
- Conducting comparative and collaborative studies with other jurisdictions, in Canada and internationally
Our research methods and processes
Members of the REVU team are clinicians, scientists and researchers with experience in a wide range of research methods, including qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research.
To ensure the best available information and evidence are applied to CPSA operations, we incorporate experiential knowledge, novel data collection techniques, inferential and descriptive statistics and the principles of program evaluation.
