Highlights from September’s Council meeting

CPSA Council, composed of regulated members, Albertans and learners, sets the organization’s overall direction and policies. Council generally meets four times per year to discuss key issues and make important decisions that impact medical practice in Alberta.

There are lots of ways to keep up with Council before, during and after the quarterly meetings. The agenda and dossier materials are available on CPSA’s website prior to each meeting. Regulated members and the public are welcome to observe Council meetings virtually by filling out the attendance form on our website. You can also follow along on CPSA’s X (Twitter) account as we highlight key discussions and decisions throughout the day. If you’re not able to follow the meeting in real time, you can also find the meeting minutes on our website a few weeks later.

Here are some key highlights from the September meeting:

  • Council received assurance that CPSA is working towards its strategic directions through its efforts in addressing professional conduct complaints, making sponsorship applications accessible, building authentic Indigenous connections, addressing misinformation about the organization in the public sphere, and incorporating artificial intelligence in guiding the medical profession.
  • Council approved the budget and business plan for 2025, which included the reduction of physician annual fees to $2,000.
  • Council received further assurance of CPSA’s commitment to truth and reconciliation through discussions around the organization’s Path to Truth and Reconciliation, which includes work towards unpacking the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, developing and releasing a statement of action and apology, and developing a Standard of Practice.

The next Council meeting will take place on Dec. 5 and 6, 2024. In the meantime, don’t forget to vote in the CPSA Council election, which is underway now until Oct. 30.
