IPAC Core Competencies | Public Health Ontario
All staff members in your medical clinic should have basic IPAC skills and knowledge. Public Health Ontario offers a suite of online courses for both medical and non-medical staff aimed at helping to understand IPAC principles and improve staff and patient safety.

All FAQsCan reusable medical clinic linens and cloth gowns be taken home for laundering?
No. Clinic linens and reusable gowns must be laundered either:
- On-site using a process that meets manufacturer instructions and infection prevention and control requirements, or
- Through a contracted commercial laundry service.
Home laundering does not meet infection prevention and control requirements for effective cleaning and pathogen removal.
Do medical clinic floors need to be routinely disinfected?
Clinic floors must be maintained in a clean state and kept in good repair. Routine disinfection of floors is not required unless they are visibly soiled with blood, body fluids or other known contaminants. In those situations, cleaning and disinfection must be performed promptly.
Does every medical clinic examination room require a hand hygiene sink?
Every examination room must have access to a hand hygiene station. A hand hygiene station may include:
- A dedicated sink with warm running water, liquid soap and paper towels, or
- Alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR).
A dedicated hand hygiene sink is required in examination rooms where procedures are performed.
