CPSA sanctions Dr. Johannes Botha for unprofessional conduct
Edmonton, AB – Dr. Johannes Botha, a family physician from Gibbons, was found guilty of unprofessional conduct and sanctioned by a CPSA Hearing Tribunal.
It was alleged that from 2007 to 2022, Dr. Botha did not create an adequate record for his patient, particulars of which included (but are not limited to) a history of presenting concerns, multiple encounters of behavioural disturbances, depression, anxiety or ADHD, and a lack of details on illnesses, treatments, severity of symptoms and examination findings.
It was also alleged that in 2024 and 2025, Dr. Botha did not cooperate with a CPSA complaint investigator by failing to respond to multiple communications attempts.
After considering the evidence and hearing from witnesses, the Hearing Tribunal found Dr. Botha guilty of unprofessional conduct. The Tribunal reconvened at a late date to consider submissions on sanction and their orders include the following:
- Dr. Botha’s practice permit is suspended for 60 days (start date is to be determined).
- At his own expense, Dr. Botha must complete a course in record keeping within 12 months from the date on the sanction decision.
- Within three months of completing the record-keeping course, Dr. Botha must enroll and participate in CPSA’s Individual Practice Review program.
- Dr. Botha is responsible for a portion of the costs associated with the investigation and hearing, totalling $6,500.
- Dr. Botha shall pay a fine of $500 within six months of the date on the sanction decision.
Dr. Botha did not attend either hearing and did not submit a recommendation on sanction to the Hearing Tribunal.
