Back to MessengerRead time: 2 minutes
The Research & Evaluation Unit (REVU) is a part of our Analytics, Innovation and Research (AIR) department here at CPSA. AIR is a leader in evidence-based medical regulation and helps improve patient outcomes through data-based and innovative approaches.
The REVU team conducts health and regulatory-focused research with external partners, and supports all CPSA departments by addressing salient research questions and evaluating program effectiveness.
REVU’s research & global leadership
REVU continues to put Alberta on the map when it comes to advancing smarter, evidence-based medical regulation. From publishing in leading peer-reviewed journals to showcasing work at international conferences, REVU is shaping conversations that directly connect physician performance, patient experience and system-level improvement.
Research: new publications
Health data access, quality, and use: Factors impacting physician performance – Ewan Affleck, Nicole Kain, Cliff Lindeman, Iryna Hurava, Yeong-Bae Kim, Katie Kjelland, Kushagr Kumar, 2025
Topic | How does this research impact patient care? | How does this research impact physician performance? | How does this research impact our partners in medical regulation? |
Health data access, quality and use | This research demonstrates the importance of reliable, high-quality health data. Without it, patient care can become fragmented or delayed. | This research emphasizes that performance is shaped, not just by skill, but by the tools and information available to them. | For partners, the message is clear: collecting more data isn’t enough. The real impact comes from investing in systems that make data accessible, connected and meaningful. |
Patient Complaints Differ for Male and Female Obstetrician-Gynecologists: an exploration of 20 years of complaints data in Alberta, Canada | International Journal for Quality in Health Care | Oxford Academic
Patient complaints about OBGYNs | This study highlights that complaints most often focus on communication and professionalism, reminding us that how care is delivered matters as much as what is delivered. | This study reveals that while many complaint differences disappear once factors like age and training are considered, male OBGYNs remain more likely to receive ethics-related complaints, showing the importance of reflecting on communication style and boundaries. | The findings in this study reinforce the value of complaints as more than isolated issues; they are system-level signals that can inform training, policy and patient safety. |
Global leadership: REVU at IAMRA 2025
REVU participated in the 16th International Association for Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA) Conference on Medical Regulation in Dublin, Ireland from Sept. 3–6, 2025.
More than 460 delegates from 37 countries attended IAMRA 2025 in Dublin, and CPSA’s REVU had a major presence by delivering 4 oral presentations and presenting 6 of the 45 total posters. Oral presentations covered patient perspectives on care, complaint processes, regulator–government collaboration and long-term complaint trends in obstetrics and gynecology. Poster topics ranged from physician wellness and the impact of commute distance on performance, to whether doctors have their own family physicians, international medical graduate performance and defining workforce metrics. Collectively, this body of work underscored Alberta’s role as a global leader in proactive, data-driven regulation.
How does REVU’s participation demonstrate our global impact?
Our participation in this conference demonstrates that the research emerging from Alberta is helping shape international conversations about safe, effective medical regulation. Alberta has become a leader in influencing global standards while grounding local regulation in comparative, international evidence.
Together, our research publications and CPSA’s strong showing at IAMRA highlight a consistent theme: regulation is most effective when it is informed by data, attentive to patient experience and globally connected. By advancing research and engaging internationally, REVU is ensuring that Alberta’s regulatory system not only protects patients today but also leads the way in shaping the future of medical regulation worldwide.
