Committee Opportunities

Make a difference in the medical profession

Why join a CPSA committee?

If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to lend your expertise and make a difference in the medical profession, consider serving on a CPSA committee.

Joining a CPSA committee is a great way to have a positive impact on health care in Alberta, while gaining and strengthening leadership and governance skills.

Role of a committee member

Since we regulate the practice of medicine in Alberta, the purposes of our committees are wide-ranging. Committees provide guidance and expertise on topics including governance, physician competence, anti-racism and anti-discrimination and more.

Each committee benefits from the knowledge of its committee members, who may be medical professionals, field experts or members of the public.

What’s it like to be part of a CPSA committee?

Participating in CPSA committees is a great way to have a positive impact on health care in Alberta, while gaining and strengthening leadership and governance skills.

"By participating in our committee work, physicians and members of the public can gain a better understanding of the inner workings of CPSA and medical regulation, and have a real impact on policy and regulatory development. In my experience, the discussions we have around the committee tables are rich and collaborative think tanks, and the perspectives of participants reflect a wide range of backgrounds, knowledge and experiences. We all learn from each other and work together in support of CPSA’s mandate to protect the public."

- Laurie Steinbach, former public member of CPSA Council, the Governance Committee and the Anti-Racism Anti-Discrimination Committee

Do you have a knack for applying your expertise to solve complex problems? Are you interested in medical facility accreditation and high-quality health care?

If so, consider applying to be a member of CPSA’s Accreditation Expert Panel roster. This role is designed to elevate the quality, consistency, and defensibility of accreditation decisions, and ensures accreditation decisions are technically sound, transparent and resilient under scrutiny.

This is not a governance role. It is a critical advisory function that strengthens the integrity of the overall decision-making process.

Qualifications:

  • Experienced physicians and/or subject matter experts who can deliver rigorous, independent, evidence-informed analysis on complex accreditation matters.
  • Background in at least one of the following areas: Diagnostic Imaging, Cardiac Stress Testing, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Diagnostic Laboratory Medicine, Neurodiagnostic, Non-Hospital Surgical Facilities (i.e. surgical specialties and anesthesiology), Pulmonary Function Diagnostics, Sleep Medicine Diagnostics OR Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy (PAPT).
    • Physicians who refer patients to these accredited services, including those working in family medicine and general internal medicine, are also encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

As a member of the Expert Panel Roster, your primary role will be to sit on at least one monthly virtual panel per year. In addition, you may be asked to consult on complex and high-impact case files, using your expertise to provide evidence-informed analysis and/or recommendations that may be used to support Accreditation Expert Panel deliberations.

This role will include the analysis and review of the following topics:

  • Interpretation and application of accreditation standards
  • Analysis of accreditation status questions
  • Patient and staff safety issues and risk considerations
  • Procedures being considered for addition to the Prescribed Health Services list and associated scope implications
  • Accreditation Standard revisions feedback and review
  • Emerging practice models, technologies or delivery structures
  • Regulatory and system-level risk analysis

Expected time commitment

  • Accreditation Expert Panel participation: Virtual accreditation panels will be held once a month, each up to 3 hours in length. Experts must sit on at least one panel per year.
  • Expert review: An average expert review takes approximately 4 to 8 hours. These will be discussed with roster members on a case-by-case and capacity basis.

Compensation:

  • Honorarium and expenses for the role of a panel member will be paid at CPSA rates. Time spent providing expert review for case consultation will be paid hourly (please note, expert review is considered a contract position, not an employment opportunity within CPSA).

Complaint Review Committee (CRC) and Hearing Tribunals

Do you have experience in dispute resolution?

We are currently seeking physicians for our Complaint Review Committee (CRC) and Hearing Tribunals.

A CRC reviews dismissed complaints at the request of complainants, while a Hearing Tribunal considers evidence and arguments in adjudicating a charge of unprofessional conduct against a physician. Both CRCs and Hearing Tribunals are made up of physician and public members.

We promise an interesting, challenging, and very satisfying experience.

CRC and Hearing Tribunal positions are open to physicians of all specialties who are in good standing with CPSA. Experience serving on tribunals or committees, in formal administrative positions, or assessing medical students, residents, or physicians for readiness to enter practice are valuable assets.

Expected time commitment is one day for a CRC meeting, one-to-two days for a Hearing Tribunal, plus up to 15 hours depending on the complexity of a case. The Chair of the CRC or Hearing Tribunal is also responsible for preparing decision documents with the assistance of legal counsel. Decision writing training will be provided as this position requires members to synthesize large amounts of information and write decisions.

Honorarium and expenses are paid at CPSA rates, and training is provided.

Please note that physicians wishing to be nominated to this committee must have been in full-time independent practice for at least five years.

Indigenous Advisory Circle - Elder

The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) is respectfully seeking a First Nations, Metis or Inuit Elder from Treaty 6, 7 or 8 to join the Indigenous Advisory Circle (the Circle) and help guide us on our Path to Truth and Reconciliation.

As a member of the Circle, the Elder will help guide CPSA’s efforts to support Indigenous patient safety in Alberta by:

  • participating in Indigenous Advisory Circle meetings
  • providing opening and closing remarks and/or prayer to start and end meetings in a good way
  • supporting a safe environment for sharing and learning
  • providing guidance to the Indigenous Advisory Circle and the CPSA team

About CPSA

CPSA is the regulator for physicians and physician assistants in Alberta. Our legislated role is to protect and serve the public interest, and our mission is to protect all Albertans.

Patient safety is at the heart of our work. Our focus on safe health care is central to everything we do at CPSA, including:

  • setting standards of practice for doctors (our regulated members)
  • licensing qualified doctors
  • monitoring doctor competence
  • investigating complaints

About the Indigenous Advisory Circle

The Circle was established in December 2021. Since then, members have guided CPSA on our reconciliation journey, helping us to identify how we can better support Indigenous Peoples and guide the doctors—our regulated members—who provide their health care.

Considerations

We are seeking an Elder with an understanding of health care in Alberta who can share their perspectives on Indigenous health and patient safety.

Meetings take place at least four times a year and are virtual, with the possibility of in-person meetings as well. This means all members must have access to a computer capable of video conferencing.

Meetings are typically 2-3 hours long, and materials are emailed to members for review in advance of meetings. To express our gratitude for participating in meetings, CPSA provides honoraria to Circle members (including Elders).

If you or someone you know is interested in this opportunity or you would like to learn more, please email us at support@cpsa.ca or call 1-800-561-3899.
