Are you looking for a deeper understanding of what complementary and alternative medicine means in the current context of physician practice?

Participate in a free webinar on Nov. 19 from the Coalition for Physician Enhancement, titled: “Assessment of physicians whose practices encompass complementary and alternative/integrative medicine”. Register here.

CPSA will consult on possible changes to our Complementary and Alternative Medicine standard of practice in 2020—keep an eye on future issues of Messenger for details.

The latest updates: CPSA Standards of Practice

We’ve been hard at work on amending our three standards of practice about reporting (Self-Reporting, Duty to Report a Colleague and Duty of Treating Physicians and Physicians Working in the Context of a Provincial Health Program to Report a Physician to the College). The amended standards will go to CPSA Council at the end of November for review. If Council approves the draft amendments, we will move ahead with the formal consultation. Watch for your invitation for feedback in early December!

Also, we recently made a small clarification in our Responsibility for a Medical Practice Advice to the Profession document. On page four under “Staff identification”, we explain that nametags worn by clinic staff do not require last names.

Questions? Contact CPSA Standards of Practice Coordinator Chantelle Dick, at chantelle.dick@cpsa.ab.ca.

General surgery questions? Ask a surgeon through Alberta Netcare eReferral Advice Request

Edmonton Zone Surgery–General Surgery is now accepting eReferral Advice Requests. Physicians and their clinical support staff can ask non-urgent clinical questions and receive a response from a General Surgeon within five calendar days.

For more information about eReferral, go online.

Is your private clinic following legislation around vaccine storage and handling, patient assessment and reporting of immunizations and adverse events?

The Immunization Regulation applies to both provincially-funded and privately-purchased vaccines. Review the Alberta Health resources to make sure your clinic meets expectations.

Influenza immunization in adult and pediatric cancer patients: resources now available

Being vaccinated for influenza annually is strongly recommended for healthcare providers and family members as the best way to protect vulnerable patients with cancer. The inactivated flu vaccine may be appropriate for most adults and pediatric patients with cancer, to help give more protection.

For more information, review the Clinical Practice Guideline and Clinician Fact Sheet.

RhPAP’s Financial Incentive for Rural Staff Training (FIRST) Program

Is there training that would benefit your rural healthcare team, but no other program provides funding for it? With RhPAP’s Financial Incentive for Rural Staff Training (FIRST) Program, there’s support for that. Rural teams of two or more, from at least two of Alberta's regulated health professions, are eligible to apply for up to $5,000 to host a training event in their rural community.

Participate in a research study: medical cannabis survey

Researchers at the University of Calgary are seeking physicians practising in Alberta to complete a short, online survey concerning your opinions, knowledge and experience in relation to medical cannabis and Canadian legislation. The survey is anonymous, fixed-choice and takes 10 minutes to complete. This study has been approved by the University of Calgary Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (REB19-1558).

Take the survey.
